Steve M: ...the RedState blogger and Rush Limbaugh (and Malkin and , clearly, the GOP leadership) want crazy people to get upset. They don't care about the potential consequences.
And while he's pointing this out re: the Obama Administration's pretty reasonable response to the Crazy Eileens Against Health Care Reform, what's sad and a little scary is that the Lamebones and Ericksons, et al, are letting loose with their batshit insane rhetoric about pretty much anything...sort of like an Oxycontin addict doubling his dose in order to feel the high...or someone insisting on viewing reality through the lens of a cheap comic book.
Unless he's "vindicated" on appeal, Dollar Bill will be a jailbird. But I'll repeat my .000000002 cents worth from a while back: regardless of how this turns out, and while fully supporting the idea that Mr. Jefferson was and is entitled to defend himself vigorously and to the extent he can under the law, the real crime was his insistence on preserving his personal privilege at a time when New Orleans DESPERATELY needed leadership beyond even the merest hint of suspicion. Jefferson compounded tragedy with selfishness, and lost what little sympathy I might have had for the guy.
It's nice to see a degree of maturity in United States diplomacy. Wingnuts will howl, but this WASN'T about juvenile chest puffing (hmmm...like the latest teabagger actions), and this wasn't even about Kim Jong Il's ego-in-inverse-proportion-to-his-physique, or even about US/North Korean relations. It was about freeing two women, real women with lives, with families and loved ones, not cartoons or pawns in some dysfunctional Grand Game.
And it worked. Welcome to reality. Adult behavior preferred.
And if the answer is basically "holy shit," well, at least we know...but, and maybe it's just the eternal optimist in me, I'd like to think most people wouldn't touch old Crazy Eileen with a thirty foot teaspoon.
